Then I was just grossed out!’ added someone else.
These days, the slots are no longer needed, since most people use fully disposable razors.
But that wasn’t always the case.

At the turn of the twentieth century, men who wanted to shave their face went to a barbershop, where a professional shaved them with a straight-edge razor.
In 1903, Gilette came out with an alternative that men could use at home: a double-edged safety razor.
In the past, many people discovered that razor blades were discarded behind walls , while others even shared stories of finding the blades in their own homes

In 1903, Gilette came out with an alternative that men could use at home: a double-edged safety razor
But these disposable blades introduced a problem, because they couldn’t be thrown in the trash.

For one, the sharp blades were unsafe for people handling the garbage — but they also might end up in people’s gardens, since trash was often burned and the ash spread in gardens in the 30s and 40s.
So, according to , these razor slots were invented as a way to safely get rid of the blades.

Since the blades were so small, the idea was that it would take a really, really long time for them to fill up a wall cavity.
’Old medicine cabinets were installed directly inside the interior walls,’ Richard D’Angelo, Project Manager at JWE Remodeling and Roofing, told Reader’s Digest.
’These old units had a slot in the back that was used to discard used blades, which would allow them to fall into the wall cavity between framing studs, and collect on top of the bottom-plate stud.
’We have found stacks of razor blades in the walls at least a dozen times when we do remodels and restorations of older homes,’ D’Angelo added.
’We even once found them in the ceiling of the first floor: they fell through the wall from the second-floor bathroom, down a hole made for plumbing pipes, and into the ceiling cavity of the kitchen. When we demolished the old plaster ceiling, the razors came raining down. Luckily no one was hurt!'
